DR. TARR: So in summary, symptoms of
diffuse abdominal pain are common in all
childhood populations, in all populations in the
world, and in working this up you have to
balance the likelihood of finding an abnormality,
specifically a treatable abnormality, versus the
stress for the child in the work-up.
And for this reason, I hesitate
to recommend that any child with abdominal pain
following an E. coli 0157 infection undergo a
massive battery of imaging studies because the
yield is still relatively low and this child has
just been through a very stressful time and so
has his or her family.
