DR. TARR:
Now, this is what is believed to underlie the symptoms that we see in many patients who meet the case definition of irritable bowel syndrome. This is a study from a textbook of gastroenterology in which the response of normal controls was compared to that in patients with irritable bowel syndrome who had a balloon put in their rectum.
The balloon was then distended with water, to increasing volumes: 20 milliliters, 40 milliliters, 60 milliliters. Thirty milliliters is one ounce. The normals said they don't feel anything until about three ounces were put into the balloon, then they started to appreciate something. And then after six ounces were put into this balloon that's inside the rectum 10 or 15 percent of normals said "ouch."
However, you can see that on the red curve, patients that meet the case definition of irritable bowel syndrome reacted to this balloon sooner as a population.
