      Irritable bowel syndrome is also call spastic colon. It is not inflammatory bowel disease, it is not ulcerative colitis, it is not Crohn's disease. Again, like I said, it's found in about 15 percent of the population.
      However, there have been some data from Europe published in the British Medical Journal, which is in your handout list that suggested that an acute gastrointestinal event, acute bacterial gastroenteritis, mostly Salmonella, can trigger IBS - And I wouldn't be surprised if E. coli could also trigger irritable bowel syndrome. It is not known if this IBS will become a lifelong problem.
