MS. ORRBINE:
There was no increase in the risk of clinically important central nervous system sequelae when patients were compared with their carefully matched controls. On all main measures of cognitive, academic and behavioral function children with HUS fared no worse than their controls.
These formal observations accord with low rates of grade retention, remedial services in both groups. We saw really equal mean in our HUS and controls for extra help and are consistent with more recent reports for good neurological outcome despite prolonged coma and other acute neurological symptoms for some of the children during their acute episode.
