DR. LINGWOOD:
So what is the basis of this? Okay, one of the questions then is: Is the mucosal Gb3 which is present in cattle protective? Somehow if you bind the toxin in the mucosal layer, this first layer of the GI tract, does it prevent getting into the systemic circulation and causing disease? These are the questions that hopefully we will soon answer.
Okay. So the human gastrointestinal tract does not contain the Gb3 mucosal layer. So how does the toxin get into the circulation. And nobody knows, essentially. So this then is a risk factor. Maybe there's a genetic variation in how toxin transits the mucosal barrier.
