DR. CORNEL:
This was a CT scan obtained in mid November and, again, it's far from normal. The ventricals are filled with cerebral spinal fluid. These are much larger than normal. The brain looks somewhat shrunken away. There's more fluid around than we normally see.
There is loss of differentiation between the gray matter and the white matter. Just as we saw with the electroencephalogram there is no sign of any hemorrhage or stroke or clots.
We have seen pictures like this in other children who have just had long, severe illness following cardiac surgery with full recovery. So a picture like this is not indicative, for sure, of any good or bad outcome. It's just something to worry about.
I don't have a follow-up study, unfortunately, perhaps fortunately. She has a strong mind of her own and is not keen on coming to the hospital. As we have heard that is a common attitude.
