DR. BRANDT:
So how do you know if your child has any renal damage or will have some? A child should have yearly follow-up with a pediatric nephrologist or general pediatrician familiar with HUS, including blood pressure checks, urinanalysis to look for protein, and some measure of GFR every few years.
And I think this is useful for the family and patients, and from a public health standpoint, it's extremely useful for nephrologists and people who treat HUS and follow it to give us some sense of what's happening to patients long, long after HUS.
