DR. BRANDT:
So what next? Of course, the primary focus, I think, has to be on continued prevention. We can't do much about the long-term effects of HUS after HUS has happened except maybe to use ACE inhibitors. The best we can do today is rapid detection and early supportive treatment of HUS and then consistent long term follow-up.
So I think for someone with diabetes or high blood pressure, you just have to get into the mind set that you have to check out your kidney function every once in a while. Go to the doctor and see how your blood pressure is, whether there is protein in your urine, and you should have a GFR measurement of some kind done every few years. It is a hassle.
If you come here to Children's Hospital, you've got to sit for eight hours, but it's the best way to know what your kidneys are doing and the best way for us to learn what we should be telling parents and families about their future.
