DR. BRANDT:
How do we evaluate HUS outcomes? Same old thing: our renal function tests, GFR. Some people use renal plasma flow or renal concentrating ability. GFR may be measured by a variety of methods, sometimes comparing one study to another.
Proteinuria may be measured by dipstick. Protein creatinine ratios are 24 hour protein tests, and then renal biopsies are sometimes done. But there are a variety of different measures used to look at outcomes, which sometimes make it difficult to compare one study to the other, directly.
