MS. ORRBINE:
In 1991 a group which I will
describe for you in a few minutes a group
referring to the Canadian Pediatric Kidney
Disease Research Center studied 22 survivors of
HUS whose neurological function was grossly
normal at discharge from hospital.
Pointing out, though, that six
of those 22 children did experience seizures or
coma again during the acute episode but were
normal neurologically at the time of discharge.
We identified a nonspecific
trend in these 22 children toward deficits in
some aspects of verbal intelligence, language
skills and behavioral control. Statistical
comparisons, as you can appreciate on a sample
size of 22 children just wasn't -- we weren't
able to establish any sort of statistical
significance. The sample size, of course, was
too small.
