MS. ORRBINE:
Just as a very quick background, and I'm kind of glad that this slide was included, I included this slide because I think one of the things that perhaps hasn't been emphasized today or at least stated is that Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome is, in fact, the leading cause of acute renal failure in a child.
Typically HUS follows a gastrointestinal illness caused by strains of E. coli that elaborate verotoxin or Shiga toxins or STS. We all know exactly what we're referring to.
Again, as mentioned by Dr. Brandt and Dr. Tarr it's important to mention that the studies we're going to talk about this afternoon, in fact, are studies on children who have diarrhea, E. coli, Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome.
HUS has an annual incidence of 1.44 to 1.74 hundred thousand children less than 15 years of age in North America.
