DR. MAUSETH:
Now the diagnosis in the acute phase is sometimes confused because it's a real question is this a stress response or is it truly diabetes. And the degree of elevation of blood sugar is what is going to give you the answer there. If you have an extremely high blood sugar of three or four hundred, it is the more likely that the pancreas is less sufficient to allow it. The longer a period of time you have the elevated sugar, the more likely that you're to have permanent problems with the diabetes.
Now, there are some tests you can do, some of these are hospitalized tests. Fasting blood sugar is a good test. It should be under a hundred. Post granule blood sugar tests should be under 170 or 180 depending on how old your child is, or the patient is.
