DR. CORNEL:
The next day the diarrhea got somewhat less but she complained of a lot more abdominal pain. Worryingly, she had episodes of disorientation. She was talking to the clock on the wall and thought the nurse was her brother.
Her creatinine was rising rapidly, so was the blood nitrogen. Her hemoglobin fell, not profoundly at this stage, down to 82 grams, platelets down to 30.
Chest x-ray, (and I will show you what this looked like in a moment or two), showed pulmonary edema. So the lungs were getting full of water.
She was really sick and was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit and hemodialysis was started.
