This is the last micrograph I will show you, but here is an electron micrograph of fibrin clots that form in HUS. We see strands of fibrin which form and can trap red blood cells in them, which can lead to a solid blood clot.
Some of these red blood cells will get through these fibrin strands, but will be sheered in half or broken in the process. And that's why we see these broken red blood cells on the peripheral blood smear of patients with HUS or TTP.
