Safe
Food Coalition
S.T.O.P.
is a member of the Safe Food Coalition. The Safe Food Coalition
was established in January 1987 to seek action on the 1985
National Academy of Sciences report, "Meat and Poultry
Inspection: The Scientific Basis of the Nation's Program."
In the ensuing years the Coalition has worked to educate the
public about the hazards of foodborne illness and sought Congressional
and Administrative action to improve meat, poultry and seafood
inspection.
The Safe Food Coalition is an informal group of consumer,
public health, whistleblower, senior citizen and labor organizations.
Before the Coalition takes a position on any issue or submits
testimony, a statement is circulated to all associated groups.
Representatives of the groups edit the paper and negotiate
differences that may arise. When agreement is reached, the
statement or testimony is recirculated for sign-off by the
groups and it understood that the statement reflects the position
of the groups that sign.
Members of the Safe Food Coalition include: American Public
Health Association, American Association of Retired Persons,
Center for Science in the Public Interest, Consumer Federation
of America, Environmental Information Center, Food and Allied
Service Trades Department of the AFL-CIO, Government Accountability
Project, National Consumers League, Public Citizen, Public
Voice for Food and Health Policy, Safe Tables Our Priority,
and United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.
Consumers Union, which is not a formal member of the Coalition,
generally signs onto Coalition statements.
Carol Tucker Foreman, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for
Food and Consumer Services (1977-81), serves as coordinator
of the group.
