DR. LINGWOOD:
Whereas the cell which is not very
sensitive but still has the same amount of Gb3,
it targets the toxin inside to this area here.
The nucleus, which you can't see, is just here,
offset, and here. So the nucleus is completely
negative and this labeled structure here is the
Golgi.
So in the cell which is not too
sensitive, the toxin is internalized to the Golgi
but not to the nucleus. And in the cell that
is highly sensitive, the endoplasmic reticulum
and nucleus are targeted. If you treat the Golgi
treating cells with butyrate, then these cells
now target the toxin instead to the endoplasmic
reticulum in the nucleus and this correlates with
increased VT sensitivity.
