DR. LINGWOOD:
Another risk factor, is the transcytosis of the toxin across the epithelial cell layer in the gastrointestinal tract. This figure is showing VT1 transcytosis and on the right is VT2. And this is a model system where you have monolayer cells and you look for transit of the toxin from one side to the other. This is work by Acheson in Boston. And so this is looking at percentage transit of VT1 when you add colchesine, which is an inhibitor of microtubular function. You see that you lose the ability to translocate the toxin from one side to the other. Whereas VT2 translocation is actually stimulated. So that means that the mechanism by which the toxin leaves the GI tract and gets into the blood system is different for the VT1 and VT2.
