DR. CORNEL:
I have a case report, because it was dramatic and it is, to say the least, unusual, perhaps unique. This occurred in 1995. This eight-year-old girl had previously been healthy. She presented in our emergency room with a history of five days of sore throat and feeling ill. All this is familiar from today's presentations.
Three days before admission she had the onset of crampy abdominal pain and then increasingly severe bloody diarrhea. A fever was quite high at 102 Fahrenheit for you Americans, 39 Celsius in real numbers.
She was brought to the emergency room and after a period of observation in the emergency room for a few hours overnight she was admitted.
