DR. BRANDT:
So in summary I think the big picture is that most kids who have HUS get better. The majority of kids have a full clinical recovery. Three to five percent, well, four percent have severe damage, have end stage renal disease within a couple of years, and you know who those patients are. Usually when they leave the hospital, the big question that's unanswered is, who are the children at risk of future kidney problems? Maybe those with high blood pressure, those with persistent proteinuria, and certainly those with a low GFR are at high risk. All children with HUS should have life-long follow-up to look for these problems developing.
