DR. BRANDT:
New, high blood pressure after HUS may also be a sign of permanent renal injury.
Now, hypertension is very common in the US, and about 20 percent of adults have hypertension. So, someone who develops high blood pressure 30 years after HUS, may have high blood pressure unrelated to HUS. However, renal scars can lead to high blood pressure through the increased production of the hormone Renin and ACE inhibitors block Renin.
So children who have high blood pressure after HUS are often treated with ACE inhibitors and that may be protective of the kidney.
