DR. BRANDT:
As we've heard about, other organs are involved in acute HUS. Again, this chart refers only to the E. coli associated HUS. The intestine is involved in a hundred percent of cases. This does not refer to the E. coli infection. Like other organs, the intestine has a thrombotic microangiopathic process within the blood vessels in the intestinal wall.
Liver enzyme abnormalities or more severe liver function is seen in 40 percent of patients. About 20 percent of patients will have a seizure, coma or stroke. And about 20 percent of patients will have pancreatic abnormalities. Sometimes these are asymptomatic [ with elevated enzymes], sometimes more symptomatic pancreatic dysfunction.
We will hear more about heart abnormalities later, but in large studies or in combinations of small studies, heart, lung and other organs are less frequently involved with acute HUS.
