DR. BRANDT:
This is a graph showing GFR normals. Children under two do have lower GFR's, even when adjusted for body size. This is due to functional immaturity of the kidney. As children grow, their renal function matures until it normalizes around 124 months of age. So there is a normal increase in adjusted GFR for the first couple of years of life. After that, GFR is relatively stable for the remainder of childhood and young adulthood when adjusted for body surface area.
