      Here's a normal kidney biopsy. And the salient features here are the very thin, delicate membranes that make up the capillary. The white area in the middle is the blood vessel lumen where the blood is traveling. And this membrane here is the filtration barrier between the blood and the urine space. We see lots of thin delicate loops in here.
      And in HUS what we see is a very dense looking glomerulus. You see a glomerulus with very few open capillary loops. In the capillaries, the membrane between the blood and the urine space is very thick. So there is a much larger space that the water and salts and waste products have to move across to get from the blood into the urine.
