DR. BRANDT:
      Now, if we look in cross-sections, the blood is coming in, circulating around the outer portion of the kidney here, which is called the renal cortex; this is really where the action is; this is where the blood is being filtered to form urine.
      The central part of the kidney is largely collecting tubules which are carrying the form urine down into the renal pelvis and then out the ureter.
      We will focus mostly on the renal cortex, that's where most of the activity is in terms of function, and that's where the problems are in HUS.
