About the Speaker

Dr. Phillip Tarr, whose training is in pediatric gastroenterology (digestive tract related diseases of children), is an Attending Physician at the Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, Seattle, Washington and Professor of Pediatrics and Adjunct Professor of Microbiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Dr. Tarr has written 10 textbook chapters, largely on the topic of E. coli O157:H7.

He has authored or co-authored over 60 articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Amongst the articles and abstracts are:

"The immunohistological diagnosis of Escherichia coli O157:H7 colitis: possible association with colonic ischemia," published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology in 1998;

"Cholelithiasis following Escherichia coli O157:H7-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome," published in Pediatric Nephrology in 1998; and

"The risk of hemolytic uremic syndrome after antibiotic treatment of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections," published in the New England Journal of Medicine in June, 2000.

Dr. Tarr holds an A.B. in Biology from Brown University and an M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his internship, residency, and clinical and research fellowship training at the Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center and the University of Washington, in Seattle, and was also a post-doctoral associate at the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute.
