Dr. Piero Ruggenenti, whose training is in nephrology (kidney diseases), is an Assistant-Professor in the Division of Nephrology and dialysis of the Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo, Italy and is Head of the Department of Renal Medicine at the Clinicial Research Center of the 'Mario Negri' Institute for Pharmacological Research in Bergamo.

Dr. Ruggenenti has authored or co-authored over 100 articles for publication in scientific journals, books, etc. especially in the field of renal disease progression, clinical trials in diabetic and non-diabetic chronic nephropathies and pathophysiology and treatment of hemolytic uremic syndrome.
