About the Speaker

Clifford Lingwood, Ph.D., whose training is in cell biology and biochemistry, has been the Senior Scientist at the Research Institute in the Program of Infection, Immunity, Injury and Repair and Structural Biology at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto for over 10 years. He is also presently a Professor of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology and the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto.

Lingwood has coauthored or submitted for publication 134 articles for peer reviewed publications, including:

"Glycolipid Binding of Escherichia Coli Produced Verotoxin" published in J Biol Chem.in 1987;

"Verotoxin binding in human renal sections" published in Nephron in 1994;

"Escherichia coli verotoxin binding to human pediatric glomerular mesangial cells " published in Pediatric Nephrology in 1995;

"Binding of [125I] Shiga-like toxin-1 to human endothelial cells: implications for the pathogenesis of Shiga toxin-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome" published in Endothelium in 1994; and

"Shiga toxin-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome: Interleukin-1ß enhancement of Shiga toxin cytotoxicity toward human vascular endothelial cells in vitro," published in Infection & Immunity in 1993.

He holds 14 patents in the area of glycolipids. He has spoken extensively around the world on the topics of glycolipid receptors and verotoxins.

Prior to his current positions he was an MRC scholar in the Department of Biochemistry, Hospital for Sick Children and had held Research Fellowships at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, the University of Toronto, and the University of Washington, Seattle.

Lingwood received his Ph.D.in Cell Biology in 1975 from the University of London. He holds a B. Sc. in Biochemistry and Zoology from Hull University.
